Guides for people who did not choose this job
Most executors are doing it once, under pressure, for somebody they have lost. These are written for that reader rather than for a search engine.
Everything here starts from a primary source: the legislation, HMRC, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, or the SRA's own rules. Where a page states a figure it says where the figure came from and when it was checked, and nothing about law or tax is published without review by a named person with relevant qualifications. That is set out in full in oureditorial process.
The three subjects these will cover
Written and reviewed rather than published quickly. A cluster appears here when it has guides in it, not when it has a plan.
- Probate
- What probate is, when an estate needs it, how to apply, and what the whole process costs from start to finish.
- Estate administration
- The work after the grant: valuing assets, settling debts, keeping estate accounts and distributing what is left to the beneficiaries.
- Inheritance tax
- Allowances, reliefs, the residence nil rate band, and when an estate has to file a full inheritance tax account with HMRC.
