Every one of these answers before it asks. The figures come from the prices 1,436 firms published, sold prices recorded by HM Land Registry, and the rates HMRC sets.
There is no set price for probate
522 firms publish a fixed fee for grant of probate only, from £400 to £30,000. Half charge between £900 and £1,850, and the median is £1,210.

Why these figures can be checked
On the SRA register
Every firm is SRA authorised and listed here with its SRA number. One search checks us.
Their prices, not ours
Every figure is quoted from the firm's own price page, with the date we read it. Where a firm did not say whether VAT is included, we say that.
Nobody pays for position
The order is the published price, ascending. Computed, not curated.
How the data is built, how firms are verified, how this is funded.
If you do not know where to start
Most people arrive before anybody has said the word probate. What to do when someone dies is the order it happens in, what each step costs, and which ones are free.
Probate is bought in more than one way
A grant on its own and a whole estate administered are different products. One page each, so the comparison is like for like, and the last of them is not buying it at all.
Different estates. Different questions.
What an estate holds changes the work, and the price.
The location directory
Find the probate firms nearest you, and what each one charges.
Probate takes original documents, signatures and often a house in the same town, so who is near you is a real question and not a preference. Put in a postcode and the firms come back nearest first, each with the price it publishes.
