The two ways to buy it
Grant of probate only
522 firms publish a fixed fee for grant of probate only, from £400 to £30,000. Half charge between £900 and £1,850, and the median is £1,210.
Full estate administration
452 firms publish a fixed fee for full estate administration, from £400 to £36,400. Half charge between £1,200 and £4,000, and the median is £2,500.
Fixed fees only, read from firms' own price pages. The gap between these two is the largest single decision an executor makes about cost.
Probate is the legal authority to deal with somebody who has died: their money, their property and their debts. Most estates need it, most executors instruct a firm to help, and almost nobody compares what that help costs before they instruct.
The prices are already public. Since 2018 the SRA Transparency Rules have required every firm in England and Wales that does probate work for the public to publish what it charges. Almost nobody reads those pages, because they sit one at a time on thousands of separate websites. This is all of them in one place, each figure shown with the sentence the firm wrote and the date we read it.
Every way this is priced
One page each, because the price for a grant on its own and the price for administering a whole estate are different products, and comparing them as one number is how a comparison site misleads.
See what firms actually publish
The directory lists every firm whose published probate prices we have read, cheapest first, with the sentence each figure came from and the date it was read.
