Full estate administration
Full administration is the firm doing everything: the grant, the assets, the debts, the tax, the accounts and the distribution.
What firms charge
452 firms publish a fixed fee for full estate administration, from £400 to £36,400. Half charge between £1,200 and £4,000, and the median is £2,500.
Excludes VAT unless the firm said otherwise, and excludes court fees. Every firm, with its source.
What this covers
The firm acts throughout, from valuing the estate to paying the beneficiaries. This is what most people mean when they say a solicitor is doing the probate.
It is where pricing varies most: a fixed fee, an hourly rate, or a percentage of the estate. The percentage is the one to watch, because it prices the size of the estate rather than the work done.
Common questions
- Why do quotes for the same estate differ so much?
- Because firms are pricing different things. A fixed fee prices the work, an hourly rate prices the time, and a percentage prices the estate. Compare what each includes before comparing the numbers.
- Does the executor still have to do anything?
- You still make the decisions, sign the documents and answer questions about the person who died. The firm does the work; it does not replace you as executor.
