Grant of probate only
A grant only service gets you the legal authority to act, and leaves the rest of the estate work to you.
What firms charge
522 firms publish a fixed fee for grant of probate only, from £400 to £30,000. Half charge between £900 and £1,850, and the median is £1,210.
Excludes VAT unless the firm said otherwise, and excludes court fees. Every firm, with its source.
What this covers
The firm prepares and submits the application, deals with the probate registry and hands you the grant. You do the rest: gather the assets, pay the debts, keep the accounts, distribute the estate.
It is the cheapest professional option, and the gap between it and full administration is the largest single decision an executor makes about cost.
Common questions
- What am I taking on if I choose grant only?
- Valuing everything at the date of death, closing accounts, selling or transferring property, settling debts and tax, keeping estate accounts, and distributing to the beneficiaries. You remain personally liable for getting it right.
- Can I switch to full administration later?
- Usually yes, and most firms will price the remaining work when you ask. Agree in writing what the new fee covers before the firm restarts.
What would this cost for your estate?
