Terms of use
What this site is, what the published fee figures do and do not mean, and the terms on which you use the comparison and the enquiry service.

What this site is
Probate Panel is a price comparison for probate and estate administration in England and Wales. It is built on the prices law firms are required to publish under the SRA Transparency Rules 2018, read from the firms' own websites and shown with the sentence and the date they came from.
We are not a law firm. We do not give legal advice, we cannot tell you what your estate needs, and nothing on this site is advice about your circumstances. If you need advice, instruct a solicitor.
What the figures mean, and what they do not
Every price shown is the firm's own published figure. We do not set it, negotiate it or guarantee it.
- A published price is not a quote. It is what the firm publishes for a described piece of work. What you are charged depends on your estate, and only the firm can tell you that.
- Prices change. We re-read every firm's price page each week and show the date we last read it. A price that changed since then will be wrong here until the next read.
- We can misread a page. Firms publish prices in thousands of different formats. We keep the sentence each figure came from and link the page, so you can check any number in one click, and we would rather you did. If a figure looks wrong, tell us and we will correct it.
- Figures exclude VAT unless the firm stated otherwise, and exclude court fees and other disbursements.
Always confirm the price with the firm in writing before you instruct them.
Listing and ranking
Firms appear because the SRA register shows them as authorised and doing probate work and because they publish a price we can read. No firm pays to be listed, to stay listed, or to appear higher. The order of the directory is the published price, ascending, and it is computed rather than curated.
A listing is not a recommendation and not an endorsement. We do not assess the quality of any firm's work.
Introductions
If you ask us to put you in touch with a firm, we pass your details to the firms you selected and to nobody else. Those firms may pay us a fee for the introduction, which is how the service is funded, and it never changes the price you pay. What happens after the introduction is between you and the firm: we are not a party to it and we are not responsible for the service they give you.
Using the site
You may read, quote and link to anything here. The fee dataset is published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, so you may reuse it as long as you credit Probate Panel and link the page you took it from. The sentences quoted from firms' own pages remain those firms' copyright. Everything else on the site, including the design and the written guides, stays ours.
Please do not scrape the site in a way that degrades it for other people, attempt to break it, or use it to send anybody unsolicited marketing.
Availability and liability
We work hard to keep the site accurate and available, and we do not promise it will be either at all times. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited. Subject to that, we are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, and we are not liable for the acts or omissions of any firm listed here.
Nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Governing law
These terms and any dispute about them are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction.
Changes
If these terms change we will update the date at the top of the page.
Who operates this site
Probate Panel is not yet incorporated, so there is no registered name, number or office to give. This block fills itself in from one place the moment there is, and the build refuses to publish the site without it.
