Probate for a small estate
Below certain limits a bank will release money without a grant, and some estates need no probate at all.
What this covers
Every bank sets its own threshold for releasing funds without a grant. They vary widely, from a few thousand pounds to well over fifty thousand.
If everything was jointly owned and passes by survivorship, and the rest sits under each provider's limit, there may be nothing to apply for. Ask each institution its limit before paying anyone.
Common questions
- Is there an estate value below which probate is never needed?
- No. There is no statutory threshold. Whether a grant is needed depends on what the assets are and who held them, not on a single figure, because each institution sets its own limit.
- Does a small estate still need an inheritance tax return?
- Usually not, but the estate still has to be valued to establish that, and the executor still has to be able to show the figures if HMRC asks.
