What does the probate application itself cost?

The court fee, whether this estate pays it, and what extra copies of the grant cost.

The application fee is the one cost no estate can avoid, and it is separate from anything a firm charges. Small estates below the threshold pay nothing at all.

Executors almost always need more copies of the grant than they expect, because every bank, registrar and share registrar wants to see one. Copies are cheap when ordered with the application and slower to get afterwards.

What the answer is based on

HM Courts and Tribunals Service published fees, cited with the date they were checked.

The interactive calculator is being built. What it will compute, and what it will compute it from, is set out on this page, and the figures it will use are already published in the dataset.
